VISIT TO THE JESUS COLLEGE

Yesterday afternoon some of us went to the Jesus College for a little visit. It was founded by Elizabeth I in 1571 for the education of clergy, though now people study many different subjects.

At the beginning we went in the dining hall where there are some tables because there the students and the lecturers eat. But the room isn't very large so there are two shifts to eat.

In this room the wall is covered by wooden panels and there are some paintings; the most famous of these are that of Elizabeth I, Lawrence of Arabia and Harold Wilson. In the dining hall at the bottom there is the "high table" that is reserved to the lecturers and sometimes also the senior students can eat at this table.

Before and then people starting to eat they must say a little prayer all together and nobody can start to eat or stand up if before this prayer.

Then we went across the quad and we went in the little chapel of the College, where there are regular services during term to which all are welcome. In the past the chapel was the centre of college life. However now the situation is a little different because the students have many different religious beliefs. We saw the beautiful stained glass east window and a famous painting about St. Michael subduing the devil.

At the end of our visit we saw some panels where are related the name of some students fallen in the World War II.

Even if It was short,It was a very interesting and fascinate visit.

VISIT TO DAVID LLYOD

Yesterday we visited David Llyod, a private sport centre. For first Alessandro and Marco asked some questions to the sport manager Peter. He told us that there are about 3.200 attenders and they pay £70 or £85 including tennis. Although it's an high price you can play every kind of sport you want. In fact it's a large sport centre where there are 2 swimming pools, 2 tennis courts outside and 3 ones inside, dancing and yoga rooms and a big gym.
After this visit we can do a comparison between a private sport centre and a public one. In a public centre you pay less but you don't have many comforts and you can't choose among lots of sports; instead in a private centre you pay a lot of money but you can choose many kinds of sport.

VISIT TO BATH

Saturday, the Genzano group went to Bath. It is an elegant city of United Kingdom which is in Somerset and it is very famous as a thermal centre and it is the principal location for natural baths in United Kingdom. In the morning, we visited the Roman Baths Museum and the Pump Room. The first shrine at the site of the hot springs was built by the Celts, and was dedicated to the goddess Sulis, whom the Romans identified with Minerva; however, the name Sulis continued to be used after the Roman invasion, leading to the town's Roman name of Aquae Sulis (literally, "the waters of Sulis"). After the Roman withdrawal in the first decade of the fifth century, these " waters" fell into disrepair and were eventually lost due to silting up. The hot waters, thought to be medicinal, were used through the Middle Ages and redeveloped in the eighteenth century, housed in buildings by two architects named John Wood, father and son. Visitors drank the waters in the Pump Room, a neo-classical salon which remains in use, both for taking the waters and for social functions. Victorian expansion of the baths complex followed the neo-classical tradition established by the Woods. The Roman complex, rediscovered in the late nineteenth century and reopened to the public in 1897, as well as being a major archaeological find, has become one of the city's main tourist attractions, in multi- media presentation. Of Bath's notable buildings, Bath Abbey is one of the most striking. The Abbey was originally a Norman cathedral which later was rebuilt in gothic-style in the XVII century. Bath gives the opportunity to relax in its splendid parks. Many guys spent the afternoon in the Parade Gardens, a beautiful place!!! Other people went shopping and they admired many nice shops in the Bath's streets. It was a great day which we'll never forget!!!

Our ideas about Fashion in Oxford

In our opinion Fashion in Oxford is very crazy!!.
In fact lots of people wear strange and funny clothes.
For example hot pants without tights when it's very cold or miniskirts with horrible boots!!.
While other people are very trendy. They are always inquired about new looks!.
In fact they wear very stylish clothes by famous designers like Tod's and Chanel.
In Italy people like wearing sportive clothes like hoods, gymtrousers or casual clothes like jeans,t-shirts (smart clothes are horrible!!).
They think only about beauty, fashion isn't so important!!.
While here for everybody is more important fashion than beauty!!!.
In fact lots of people are overweight!!.
And the worst thing is that no one of them is worried about weight!!!.
It's so sad!!.

VISIT TO FERRY SPORTS CENTRE

This mornirg we have been to a big sports centre in Summertown: Ferry sports centre, a public one, where you can play several health activities such as swimming in a wonderful swimming pool, body-pump( a non-impact, resistance-training programme that utilises barbells and weights), kickbox and different dance coures for example of salsa. There are also many different free sessions for children and teenager from 4 to 18. We know Summertown is very expensive so we want to give you an idea of the prices;they go from £25.90 for squash coaching, swimming to £60 for dance courses, boxercise pure step ad so on. Althought the high prices we are sure that here you can get fit in different ways, spend your free time having fun and also you can have personal fitness programmes. We suggest you to visit it.

YOUNG PEOPLE IN OXFORD: LEISURE

Today morning we went out to do the last interviews: the first time we went to the Cornmarket street, the second time to the park and this morning we went to the university.
We talked with some young people and we asked them questions also about museums, picture galleries, library, theatres and so on.
About these cultural activities just few guys said us that they attend these places.
Instead most of them spend much time at the computer, television, meeting their friends and, especially girls, doing shopping.
But some guys said us that they like playing an instrument, making a band and also making music near the canal.
We also asked them if young people need much money to do their activities. They said that they need some money if they want do something and if they hadn't much money they just could go to the park, meet their friends or some sports.
We asked some questions also about people under eighteen could do in the evening; they answered us that they generally stay at home with their parents and that just sometimes they go out with their friends.

FINALLY I COME OF AGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am Antonella and two days ago ( 12th September 2007 ) was my 18th birthday. In the morning, when I arrived at the school, all my friends wished me Happy birthday.

Later Bernard and Suzette gave me a wonderful postcard with congratulations for my 18 years...
In the afternoon there was a party organized by everyone....
I was very happy with this surprise......It was a great one!!!!!!! Everything was perfect...

One of the best moments was when Abdul gave me a gift: a little bear of chocolate with "Happy Birthday!" written on it.
It was one of the most exciting days of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom interviews

Yesterday we met Tom Edward a young man who works for Oxford City Council. Tom organises Street Sports for kids, giving them the opportunity to play sports for free. There are about 500 participants interested in this project that can play several kinds of sports, such as: sailing, canoeing, roller hockey, rock climbing, basketball and so on.
The staff is made up of 25 people. They organise sports activities every week. Also the police support the project. But sometimes Tom disagrees with them because their policy of dispersing groups of youths on the street. There are people from 2 to 64 years old! But they are mainly young people from 8 – 18.
At the moment the project includes only sport activities but Tom hopes to extend their activities to include art and music. Tom is satisfied with these results but he’d like to increase the number of the participants. We like this project, because we think it gives the opportunity to young people to get off the streets. We think it’s important because playing sports young people spend time in a better way than drinking or taking drugs.

New Fashions of Autumn

In the last paragraph we have talked about our interviews, now we are going to talk about new fashions of the next season in England. There will be an explosion of the Block Colours: electric blue, fuchsia pink, jade green and grey( very 80's retro! ).

It is important to remember if you want to be fashionable, you must know how to mix the colours. For example using one colour with black or if it is very excessive for you you can wear black clothes with several accessories like a jade green bag, purple patent shoes or chocolate gloves.

While in Italy new trends about colours next season will be red, grey, violet, blue, gold and chocolate.
So the Italian fashion is a bit different from English fashion but it's as cool as English fashion!.

Police Interview

Yesterday afternoon two police officers came to school ,we asked them some questions about our project .

DRUGS

When we asked them about drugs they told us that there are two kinds: soft ones and hard ones. A soft drug is marijuana while some hard drugs are heroine and cocaine. If they find someone with marijuana for personal use they won't charge him but if they find someone selling it they arrest him and seize his assets. In Oxford there is a special drug squad to prevent the circulation of drugs. Drugs are directly connected to theft and shoplifting in Oxford because people who want to buy drugs need money to pay for them. There is also a big drug problem in Oxford University because many students come from well off families and have lots of money to spend on drugs, cocaine in particular.

ASBO

They also talked about ASBO`s (Antisocial Behaviour Orders), it is a civil order made against a person who has been shown to have engaged in antisocial behaviour. ASBO's are useful in dispersing groups of youths, in particular hoodies who get in groups by local shops and make people feel frightened. Police make an acceptable behaviour contrat with parents who could face losing their home if they do not take responsability for the misbehaviour of their children.

CCTV

An important help to the police is given by the CCTV (Closed Circuit Television), there a lot of these cameras which record what happens in most parts of the city. Two police officers are constantly watching 20 tv screens checking if something is going wrong so they can intervene quickly. CCTV helps to reduce the number of crimes and they are present in every big city in England.

PROSTITUTION

In England prostitutes are able to work in brothels but if they create problems in the community they can be shut down. However here the problem isn't as serious as in Italy. In England kerb crawling is illegal, in fact if a man tries to pick up a prostitute in the street he will be arrested.

FIGHTS

One of the problems at night are drunk people who have fights. Last Friday we saw two drunk guys fighting in front of the Goose, the police arrived very soon and luckily nobody went to the hospital. The policeman said that these kinds of episodes are very frequent and for this reason they do lots of controls in city centre.

HOODIES

The police officers said that some young people who have problems with the police think that being a hoodie is cool because it is like an 'uniform'. The police think that people who wear a hood are going to do something bad so they want to try to change their behaviour. Some people who commit a crime wear a hood because even if CCTV records them the police can't recognize them because they can't see their faces. Vulnerable people, like old people, feel frightened when they meet some hoodies in a group. In Italy youths wear hoods but it is only a fashion, it is not related to criminal actions, we hope that this won't become the same as in England.

the sketch about homeless

Yesterday the Cosmopolitan group interviewed homeless people but it wasn't a good one because we only had "yes" "no" answers. More than that we were asked to pay for an interview which we didn't expect at all!!
However, today we prepared our sketch about it. There were ten people who took part in the sketch:Tania and Loredana( interviewers), Chiara(a hoody), Teresa(a posh girl), Antonella, Roberta, Raffaella (tourists),Alessandro(a pickpocket), Andrea and Marco(homeless men ) and Gianluca(a policeman). In our sketch we used a tiger instead of the homeless man's dog! The whole scene was in Oxford. There was a conversation between 3 tourists and they agreed that there wasn't any crime in the city. Then Chiara passed by Marco and Andrea, who played a guitar, and made a comment that the music was rubbish. Meanwhile Teresa threw the money into a hat arrogantly because she saw the homeless men as dirty people. There were a lot of spectators around the homeless men including 2 interviewers, Loredana and Tania, who wanted to ask general questions about homeless' life. After the first question Tania was asked to pay a pound for each one. Suddenly, a pickpocket turned up out of the blue, stole the hat with the money and tried to run away but the tiger attacked him. At the and the police arrested the thief.

An interview with a homeless person

Yesterday morning group 5 went to interview some homeless people and we can say that it was a very hard work!!! We met the first and the last homeless person and asked him if we could interview him; he said that he would reply if we gave him some money!! We were very surprised but to achieve our objective we gave him some money and asked him some questions. One of them was if he chose this lifestyle or if he had to live like that..He said that he hadn't any money and he must sell the "Big Issue" to survive..But in our opinion he wasn't really honest!

GENZANO'S PROJECT: "YOUNG PEOPLE'S NEEDS IN OXFORD"

Welcome everyone!!! We think it's time to introduce our project and explain its contents. How are we getting on? We thought an umbrella title could be very useful to work on a project..so we decided "YOUNG PEOPLE'S NEEDS IN OXFORD".
We have chosen this topic because in oxford there are lots of young people and we'd like to discover their life styles and compare it to Italy. In order to organize our work better we divided the project into five sub-topics, for each one five people are working. The topics are: Fashion, Sports, Oxford-A cosmopolitan city, Leisure and Oxford by night.
We are very lucky because in this school teachers try to help us with our project all the time, so we have created a lovely atmosphere in which everyone works with enthusiasm and is free to express their own ideas.
Besides, with videocameras, microphones, cameras, we are acting as journalists and we are having a lot of fun with our interviews! Then, thanks to the school project we are improving the English language and we are discovering the English way of life..
In Oxford there are young people from all over the world and they all have a different culture, have strange styles, practise various activities during their leisure time, love several kinds of sports and want to have fun in the evening..we are different people but we are realizing we are all citizens of the world!Oxford is a real melting pot.

YOUNG PEOPLE IN OXFORD: LEISURE

At the beginnig we went out to do the first interviews and we asked young people that we met in the street how they spend their free time.
Some of them were very sociable and friendly and they answered all of our questions; but some didn't want to answer...
We discovered that many people like doing shopping, going to the park, going out to meet friends, but also going to the gym and so on. Many young people in Oxford prefer staying on the computer and only some of them go to museum, library or theatre.
But we are going to do other interviews to discover something else and we want to ask some questions also to some adults about their children to know their habits.

oxford:cosmopolitan city

We are the 5th group and we want to talk to you about our part of the project. A few days ago we interviewed some English people and we asked them what they think about immigrants and they seemed very willing to talk.

After that we met people from other countries and we asked them some questions about their integration in Oxford. A part of them said that people from Oxford gave them a warm welcome, but some people said they don't feel accepted here.
We haven't finished our work yet but we think that this is a fantastic experience because we can be in touch with other cultures.

YOUNG PEOPLE IN OXFORD: SPORT

We are the second group and we want to talk about sport among young people in Oxford. We are students of the Eckersley school and here the most practised sport is table-tennis;now there is a match between Genzano and Senise, but I'm sure that the winner will be Genzano.I hope that our topic will be interesting for you!!!!
I would like to introduce the group one, our subject is Fashion and we're going to tell you about our first day of interviews.

At the beginning we were a bit embarassed and frightened but then we enjoyed with interviews.
In fact all the people that we interviewed were very friendly and they replied to all our questions.
It was a surprise discovering that for everyone we spoke to it is more important being intelligent than being good looking because we thought it was the opposite. In Italy lots of young people are more interested in beauty and would like to become a reality TV star! In addition we discovered that they spend lots of money on clothes a week ( about 200 pounds) which is more than Italian teenagers ( we spend much less money than them)!
Then it was interesting to talk to only girls( boys are so boring!) because they gave us lots of information about new fashion items for autumn. For example one of the most popular must haves is : the trench coat and other infomation about their favourite clothes. For example they like wearing bohemian and Gothic clothes , boots, skinny jeans, big dark t-shirts with skulls and exotic symbols, wide jeans and so on. Or their favourite shops; they love Primark because it's
very cheap and the clothes are very trendy and cool.
They also like reading lots of fashion magazines because it's important inquiring about new looks.

The women we spoke to love Italian fashion and Italian fashion designers like D&G or Valentine because they're so stylish.

Finally they don't think it's important being very slim!!!

A girl said:"I like myself as I am, I don't want to become like Kate Moss or Keira Knightly because I'm a special girl inside not outside" .

Here are the questions that we asked people in Oxford :

1 In your opinion is being good looking more important than being intelligent?
2 Do you think that the clothes describe your personality?
3 What do you think about fashion in Oxford?
4 Do you like reading fashion magazines?
5What are the must have fashion items for autumn?
6 What are your favourite cklothes?
7 How much do you spend on clothes a week?
8 Do you think if you aren't fashionable you will be excluded by other teenagers?
9 Do you like Italian fashion? Is it better or less expensive than English fashion?
10 Do you think it's important being very slim?
